Welcome to Celebrating Stories

Testimonials

Sarah remembered her first conversations with my mom in which she learned about my mom’s childhood.  Sarah continually used these personal memories to reach my mom in varying states of memory loss and simple day-to-day existence.  Sarah’s commitment shown to the residents and her sensitivity to their station in life was profound.  She reaches deep into their senses, while on the surface, I’m sure they are feeling they are having a chat and visit with a good friend (which indeed they are!).

Sarah reached into the heart and soul of my dad and had him reminiscing about his childhood, his special relationship with his father, and his time in which he served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard, his courtship with my mom and his enduring love for her and his family.

She engaged him with her insightful thought-provoking questions to bring his stories, which I have heard many times before, to another level.  The stories became filled with rich emotions and interesting details – all because of Sarah.  Storytelling is a great art and Sarah Lucas is a great artist!

Sarah Lucas’ historical lecture on Marie Louise Brent and her story of contributions during WWl which merited a Medal of Honor from France was fascinating! Sarah‘s presentation was illuminating and engaging to our members who attended.  Sarah was friendly and charismatic, answering several questions from the audience at the conclusion of the program. It was a wonderful highlight to our Bruch & Learn lecture series and I would highly recommend this program!

I had the privilege of getting to know and appreciate my aunt on a different level through these interviews. I was able to hear stories of our family’s history that I had never heard before including about my grandfather. Being able to hear these stories in her own voice helped to bring them more to life than reading them in a memoir. I am grateful to have received this gift.

Being a caregiver for Rosemary was such a rewarding and challenging experience. While doing this Sarah would come to visit often to talk and interview Rosemary. Having Sarah there was always a delight and she showed tons of compassion towards me and to Rosemary, she always showed interest and care towards Rosemary and made her feel like person regardless of the circumstances. Sarah is truly a person with great empathy, confidence, and a kind heart.

Sarah’s knowledge of the many realms experienced during the aging process, is profound.  She reaches all of the residents at the point of their present state.  She uses music, conversation, meditation and relaxation, enthusiasm, and her own exquisite memory to reach all of her aging, wonderful and and very individual clients.  Although each of their situations is different, Sarah is equipped to reach and assist them in a gracious and sincere manner.

Sarah shared the story of her fascinating great grand aunt Ashee (Marie Louise Brent) and how this child of privilege dedicated her life to serving the people of France, her adopted country. Ashee volunteered as a supplies driver to the fraught front lines in WWI and later worked in the Mask Studio making prosthetic masks for disfigured soldiers, bringing dignity back to their lives. Sarah’s presentation had the audience rapt. Her appreciation of the extraordinary found in the everyday lives of her subjects is evident through her enthusiastic delivery.

It was a pleasure working with Sarah Lucas, and we are grateful to have brought her presentation on the extraordinary life of Marie Louise Brent to the Alliance Française. Our guests were moved by the story of this inspiring figure, which was illustrated by powerful historical photographs and video. The program was a beautiful celebration of women artists, family history, and Franco-American friendship.
